The Toyota Matrix was a small, practical vehicle based on the Corolla. When the model went on sale in 2003 Toyota called the Matrix a crossover, but it provided no extra ground clearance for off-roading. However, it did offer an optional all-wheel-drive system. Toyota redesigned the Matrix in 2009. In addition to traditional Toyota quality and reliability, the second-generation Matrix supplies plenty of utility. Behind the rear seat, the Matrix has 19.8 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the back seat down, and it has 61.5 cu-ft of volume. In addition, the front passenger seat folds flat, allowing owners to carry items eight feet long inside the Matrix. Two engines were available, an efficient 1.8-liter four-cylinder and a more powerful 2.4-liter that could be paired with all-wheel drive. Toyota discontinued the Matrix after the 2013 model year.
