Once only found on luxury vehicles, cars with a blind spot monitor are now common at every price point. These systems use sensors to see what's in your blind spot. When something is detected, the technology warns the driver by illuminating a light either in the side-view mirror or inside the car near the mirror.

Some systems will also sound a chime or even steer you back into your lane if you attempt to change lanes when someone is in your blind spot and there's a risk of a collision. There are also blind spot camera systems, which are a bit different in that they display a live feed of what's in your blind spot on either the instrument cluster or the infotainment screen.

Nissan

Nissan Sentra

With a starting price of around $20,000, the Nissan Sentra represents one of the more affordable ways to get standard blind spot monitoring. This advanced driver-assistance feature is part of Nissan Safety Shield 360, a suite of six driver aids that come standard on Sentra. In addition to the compulsory blind spot monitor, you also get pedestrian-detecting automatic emergency braking, rear automatic braking, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beams.

Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is a full-size sedan that's available with both gas and hybrid engines. It features blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert on most of the lineup, including its hybrid trims. Accords equipped with a gas engine include this feature on all but the LX, Sport (except 2.0T), and Sport Special Edition trims. On hybrid versions of the Accord, it's standard on all but the base Hybrid trim, which gives you plenty of options if you're looking for an Accord with this feature.

This system not only warns you when there's something in your blind spot, but it's also intended to go one step further to ensure your safety: If you activate your turn signal when it senses something in your blind spot, it can also apply the left or right front brake before you change lanes as a further preventive measure.

The Ford Mustang is a sports car with a wide range of trims.
